Catch a Baby

Yesterday I had the oppurtunity to "Catch a Baby."

Your probably thinking that it looked a little like this...

But the reality is it looked more like this...

My last semester of Clinicals are all about the babies! I have 5 rotations at the U of U NICU and 8 rotations at Primary Childrens Medical Center. This week I started out at the NICU at the University of Utah. And that is where catching a baby comes into play.

It had been quite the slow afternoon when we heard we were getting 33 weeker twins! It then became much more exciting. I was assigned to catch baby A. I stood at the NICU OR window with the jitters. I had prepared by getting dressed in a plastic gown and putting a warm baby blanket over my chest and arms. I was ready to catch that baby. Then I heard a cry, and they yelled the baby was out. They passed the baby to me through the window and I took her the NICU Team. Holding that brand new baby girl in my arms was so exciting!! We warmed and stimulated her and helped her begin to breath. By the time we were done she was breathing on her own with no oxygen.

After we got her settled I looked into her wide bright eyes, and she looked back. I knew she was a tiny miracle, and I was so thrilled I had the chance to participate in the first seconds of her life.

Happy Birthday Baby A!
